Bought in 1919 by Virginia and Leonard Woolf, Monk's House is a weather-boarded 17th century cottage with extensive gardens. The Woolf's made Monk's House their writers retreat, a hub for intellectual conversation and the embodiment of Modernist Living. Virginia and Leonard were central to the Bloomsbury group and many of it's members visited or stayed at Monk's house. The house is filled with Bloomsbury items and artwork either gifted to Virginia or as part of her patronage. Virginia Woolf wrote many of her iconic works here including 'Orlando', 'To the Lighthouse' and 'A Room of One's Own'. The house feels like they've just stepped out for a walk and the garden is a beautiful haven with the sounds of the song thrush and views across to Mount Caburn.
